Early Autumn Rose Gardening

Early autumn rose gardening takes place in the months of September and October.

By this time of the year, you should start to see your roses bloom fully. They will appear full and colorful because early autumn is the best time to see results of your rose garden.

While early autumn is the best growing time for your rose garden, you will still need to prepare your rose garden for the cold winter months.

In the early autumn months, your rose garden will need plenty of water.
During this time of the year, you should continue watering you roses deeply. In addition, you will need to water the roses as often as needed to maintain there growth.

During the months of September and October, daily watering is fine. If you decide to water your rose garden daily, make sure that you do not use too much water.

When caring for your rose garden in early autumn, it is important to continue using water-soluble fertilizers. Continue using water-soluble fertilizers on your roses until the end of September.

During the early autumn months, it is also suggested that you use bloom-boosting fertilizers on your roses as well. At the end of October, you should stop fertilizing your rose garden.

When you stop fertilizing your rose garden at the end of October, you roses will start to transition into hibernation mode. In addition to fertilizing and watering you rose garden through the months of October; you will also want to spray them.

You will need to spay your roses regularly to combat black spot and mildew formation on your rose blooms. When the roses in your rose garden start to retreat, you can begin cleaning up you rose garden and planning for the spring months.

To clean up your rose garden for the winter, it is important to remove all the leaves from the ground. In addition, you will need to remove any leaves that are hanging from your rose bushes.

Removing the leaves from around your rose bushes will help to prevent any places for insects and disease spores that wish to propagate on or near your rose bushes.

To kill insect eggs and fungus spores you can use a solution of dormant oil, lime-sulfur and warm water. You can apply this mixture to your rose bushes using a spray bottle.
During the autumn months of September and October, put off pruning your rose bushes. When the end of October reaches, you should start to create protection for your roses. Many types of roses can withstand the cold winter temperatures very well.

Some rose species like the Canadian Explorer series and Rugosas only need light winter protection. Other species of roses like Hybrid Perennials, miniature roses, Hybrid Musks and Bourbon roses can also withstand the winter months quite well.

Protecting these types of roses from any frost damage that may occur can be accomplished very easily. All you need to do is pack a couple inches of compost or mulch around the base of the rose bush and its roots. Although some roses can sustain pretty well through the winter months, some types of roses will need extra care to get through the winter.

More fragile roses like the hybrid tea roses fall into this category. To protect delicate roses for the winter it is best to purchase or make a rose collar to surround the rose bush. You will need to make sure that the rose collar surrounds a foot of the rose plant.

The rose collar should then be filled with compost or soil so that it will stay in place. Placing a rose collar around your rose bushes will protect your roses from the cold winter winds and any frost that may occur during the cold winter months.
