Early
Autumn Rose Gardening |
| |
Early
autumn rose gardening takes place in the months
of September and October.
By this time of the year, you should start to
see your roses bloom fully. They will appear full
and colorful because early autumn is the best
time to see results of your rose garden.
While early autumn is the best growing time for
your rose garden, you will still need to prepare
your rose garden for the cold winter months.
In the early autumn months, your rose garden will
need plenty of water. |
|
During
this time of the year, you should continue watering
you roses deeply. In addition, you will need to water
the roses as often as needed to maintain there growth.
During the months of September and October, daily watering
is fine. If you decide to water your rose garden daily,
make sure that you do not use too much water.
When caring for your rose garden in early autumn, it
is important to continue using water-soluble fertilizers.
Continue using water-soluble fertilizers on your roses
until the end of September.
During the early autumn months, it is also suggested
that you use bloom-boosting fertilizers on your roses
as well. At the end of October, you should stop fertilizing
your rose garden.
When you stop fertilizing your rose garden at the end
of October, you roses will start to transition into
hibernation mode. In addition to fertilizing and watering
you rose garden through the months of October; you will
also want to spray them.
You will need to spay your roses regularly to combat
black spot and mildew formation on your rose blooms.
When the roses in your rose garden start to retreat,
you can begin cleaning up you rose garden and planning
for the spring months. |
| |
To clean up your rose garden for the winter, it
is important to remove all the leaves from the
ground. In addition, you will need to remove any
leaves that are hanging from your rose bushes.
Removing the leaves from around your rose bushes
will help to prevent any places for insects and
disease spores that wish to propagate on or near
your rose bushes.
To kill insect eggs and fungus spores you can
use a solution of dormant oil, lime-sulfur and
warm water. You can apply this mixture to your
rose bushes using a spray bottle. |
|
During
the autumn months of September and October, put off
pruning your rose bushes. When the end of October reaches,
you should start to create protection for your roses.
Many types of roses can withstand the cold winter temperatures
very well.
Some rose species like the Canadian Explorer series
and Rugosas only need light winter protection. Other
species of roses like Hybrid Perennials, miniature roses,
Hybrid Musks and Bourbon roses can also withstand the
winter months quite well.
Protecting these types of roses from any frost damage
that may occur can be accomplished very easily. All
you need to do is pack a couple inches of compost or
mulch around the base of the rose bush and its roots.
Although some roses can sustain pretty well through
the winter months, some types of roses will need extra
care to get through the winter.
More fragile roses like the hybrid tea roses fall into
this category. To protect delicate roses for the winter
it is best to purchase or make a rose collar to surround
the rose bush. You will need to make sure that the rose
collar surrounds a foot of the rose plant.
The rose collar should then be filled with compost or
soil so that it will stay in place. Placing a rose collar
around your rose bushes will protect your roses from
the cold winter winds and any frost that may occur during
the cold winter months. |
